LB Gary Guyton (2.29)
TE Martellus Bennett (5.6)
QB Kevin O'Connell (6.14)
RG Shannan Tevega (6.29)
C Kory Lichtensteigr (7.6)
Outgoing Players:
John Madsen TE
Jonathan Wade CB
Analyisis of Picks:
Vernon Gholston (1.6)
A physical Specimen Vernon Gholston was the consensus pick all along for the Bucs. They had targeted 3 players there Matt ryan,Gholston, Jerod Mayo. Both Mayo and Gholston were there they decided upon gholston. He is expected to start day 1 for the Bucs at DE. He is a pass rush demon with great strength, the perfect mix for a 3-4 End.
Derrick Harvey (2.6)
The pick at 2.6 was sent in withing seconds, how could they pass up a guy like harvey in the 2nd round. He was one of the top pass rushers in the nation and somehow slipped to 2.6. You think why take 2 DE's the answer is they weren't happy with the rush they got last year and with the new coach and the switch to a 3-4 they couldnt start off the draft better by bolstering the D-Line and bringing in two starters. He is expected to start opposite Gholston in the 3-4. He is a great rusher and has strength and size another great mix for the 3-4 end.
Gary Guyton (2.29)
Some may argue that this was a bit to high for guyton to be picked, and the Bucs realize that, but without a 3rd round pick they believed they needed to snag him here. They fell in love with this guys size, spd, str, acc, and tkl for a LB they feel he fits the system great and will make a great pro thats why they had to snag him with this pick or else they wouldnt get him.
Martellus Bennett (5.6)
Martellus Bennett is the complete package for a TE. He does nothing great but does everything good. He is 6'6" and has good speed for his size and exceptional hands and burst for a TE out of college. He is not yet a great blocker but shows the willingness to do so and can get better.
Kevin O'Connell (6.14)
Kevin O'Connell is a good developmental project for the QB position and the Bucs believe is a huge upgrade over mike mchamon he has good arm strength with developing accuracy. He is a smart kid but still needs help getting aclimated into the pro game.
Shannon Tavega (6.29)
Shannon Tavega is a good prospect for the O-Line this was simply a depth pick late in the round. But dont underestimate Tavega's skllls he is a good blocker and very strong, his only weakness being his mobility. Though he does have great acceleration. His ideal position is G specifically RG.
Kory Lichtensteigr (7.6)
Kory was another depth pick for the OLine but again dont underestimate him. He has good blocking skills like Tavega and is also strong but he is a little more mobile then Tavega and is ideally a C.
John Stanley had this to say, "I think we had an exceptional draft. We not only brought in quality players but got future picks. Harvey and Gholston were great value picks where we got them and will start at DE day 1. We love guyton we cant stop raving about him, although it may have been a little high for him we had no 3rd so were left to take a top rated player on our boards, we love his size, spd, str, acc, and tkl skills and will most likely start as a backup and when he progresses start. The rest of the draft we feel happy about a couple of depth picks who we feel can possibly develop into starters and a starting TE in the 5th in Bennett. Thanks for the time." |
