...Onto Knoxville? |
After a short detour through San Diego, the Houston Texans have found their way back to Tennessee with a spot in the Super Bowl on the line. However, this time around, my clever wordplay may not be applicable. In the 4th quarter of Houston's 29-15 win over the Chargers, WR Johnny Knox tore a pectoral muscle on a 10-yard punt return. His status for the AFC Championship Game is up in the air.
"I'm not worried about our ability to produce if Johnny's not able to go," Peyton told reporters on Wednesday. The team is loaded with quality talent at every skill position. Here's an examination of the production of other players in two games against the Titans this season, which the two teams split at a game apiece with Houston having a +12 scoring differential:
TE Dustin Keller has had his biggest games of the year against Tennessee, racking up 11 catches, 235 yards and 1 TD (of a season total of 52-715-2) in the two games. He was the Texans' leading receiver on both occasions.
HB Steven Jackson has also played big in the two contests. He totaled 40 carries for 262 yards, a touchdown, and one reception for 49 yards- 311 total yards in two games.
Cornerbacks Will Allen and Zach Bowman also scored defensive touchdowns in the second game, a 42-28 win in Tennessee in week 10. The defense could be primed for another big game, going up against inexperienced QB Rohan Davey filling in for injured Marc Bulger and Jay Cutler.
Should Knox not be able to go on Sunday, expect any of a large number of weapons to fill the void he leaves.
Or Johnny will play and the Texans will have a full arsenal to blast their way into Miami. |

Onto Knoxville! |
The Tennessee Titans may play their games in Nashville, but the Houston Texans hope rookie phenomenon Johnny Knox will own the hometown team next week, with the winner claiming a spot in the AFC Championship Game. Let's not be premature- surely the 6th seed Raiders could upset the 3rd seed Patriots, booking their ticket for Tennessee, in which case the Texans would go to San Diego. For now, this writer is simply assuming a New England victory due to the awesome figure of speech that results.
Revisiting Houston's wild-card victory in Baltimore, one need look no further for the source of success than the explosive rookie wide receiver from Abilene Christian. In his first career playoff game, in which he for the first time was listed as first receiver for the first time in his career, Knox hauled in three first half touchdown receptions- a career-high number, including a career-long 80-yard catch.
Knox got behind the defense.
He fought for the ball.
He was in position to catch a perfectly placed Peyton Manning throw.
Johnny's numbers totaled 9 catches for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns. Since Knox first cracked the starting lineup 5 weeks ago, he has racked up 31 catches, 709 yards, and 7 touchdowns, despite being relegated to the slot receiver for one of those games. When asked whether he would prefer going up against Tennessee's secondary or San Diego's secondary, Knox said he has no preference.
He only notched a catch in one game against the Titans this year- in week one he was injured on a 16-yard punt return after also picking up a 42-yard kick return in the loss. In the team's week 10 win in Tennessee, Knox caught 3 balls for 48 yards and a touchdown out of the slot. In a week 15 win in San Diego, as a starter Knox reeled in 9 catches for 281 yards and two touchdowns.
"Bring them on," Knox said. |
